Supernovae

News & Articles

A spiral galaxy with an oval-shaped disk. Two large arms curve out away from the ends of the disk. Bright pink patches and dark reddish threads of dust fill the arms. The bright pink patches indicate where stars are forming. The core is very bright and filled with stars. Some large stars appear in front of the galaxy. Directly under the point where the right arm joins the disk, a fading supernova is visible as a green dot.

A close-in view of a barred spiral galaxy. A bright, glowing bar crosses the center of the galaxy, with blurred spiral arms curving away from its ends and continuing out of view. Bright points of light that indicate stars and background galaxies surround the featured barred spiral galaxy. The galaxy also hosts a bright supernova in its central bar, just right of image center.

A spiral galaxy seen almost face-on. Large spiral arms whirl out from its center, filling the scene. They glow faintly blue from the stars within, with some small bright patches of blue and pink marking areas of star formation. Thin filaments of dark reddish dust that block light overlay the stars. The galaxy’s center shines brightly white.

The Crab Nebula. An oval with complex structure extends from lower left to upper right against a black background. On the oval’s exterior lie curtains of glowing yellow and green fluffy material. Its interior shell shows large-scale loops of mottled filaments of yellow-white and green, studded with clumps and knots. Translucent thin ribbons of smoky blue lie within the remnant’s interior, brightest toward its center. The blue material follows different directions throughout, including sometimes sharply curving away from certain regions within the remnant. A faint, wispy ring of blue material encircles the very center of the nebula. Around and within the supernova remnant are many points of blue, green, purple, and white light.
